ECA Community Engagement Webinar #5:

Our fifth webinar in this series featured the Coachella Valley Disaster Preparedness Network, (CVDPN), an NGO non-profit with a mission to train, educate and network all persons of the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs and nearby cities) on individual and community preparedness.

CVDPN pursues this mission by creating and developing relationships with community partners, leaders, (both NGO and Governmental), homeowner associations, property management companies, first responders, and many more. For example, the ECA/CVDPN Oct. 2021 Access and Functional Needs (AFN) webinar held before the Great California ShakeOut focused on how to communicate during a disaster with people with disabilities and access or functional needs that are often left out.

CVDPN’s “flagship program” is the Disaster Planning Academy, a 6 hour course that provides community leaders with the comprehensive education, training, tools and templates to create their own community plan, consistent with “CERT” standards and one that follows what the first responders use. The Planning Academy graduates have become confident and successful in bringing volunteers into their community plans.

CVDPN has been a fantastic partner with ECA for sharing messaging and resources with residents of the Coachella Valley, who all live between two major faults: the San Andreas and the San Jacinto. We were happy to expand our partnership and to showcase CVDPN (via this webinar) as a model for similar local efforts elsewhere.
